Brief Rundown: RAINN Concert at Eddie’s

»Posted by on Aug 25, 2007 in Concerts, Reviews | 0 comments

The concert began shortly after 6:30. The first artist to perform was Jen Foster, followed by Amy Cook. Matthew was third in line and (due to storms and travel) literally made it there just in time. The first song Matthew performed must have been somewhat new, as I had not heard it before. My initial impression, however, is that it was good. I would like to hear it again, so as to have something more substantive to say. The second song, Echoes of Eden, sounded a bit rushed. Ultimately, though, I think that this had to do with Matthew’s hurried entrance and quick setup, since by the third song, Letting Go, he had appeared to settle into his own. When it came time for the fourth song, Matthew had stated that he was going to play a sad song, to which some in the audience objected. He then played Sinking Wishes. Sadness was delayed but not stopped. Sinking Wishes was followed by the Stephen Foster song, Hard Times. Interestingly, I believe it was at this point that Matthew announced some wonderful news. He and his wife, Meghan, will be having a baby! For those of you who have children, you know that it doesn’t get much better than this. One thing is certain, when once the baby is born, Matthew will have tons of new material from which to draw for new songs. But I digress…. The sixth song played was Refuge, my favorite track off of Throwing Punches in the Dark. I must admit, it is always a bit strange for me to hear the song in its acoustic dress, though I do like it. The one benefit of the acoustic version is that one can clearly hear the words to bridge (?), which, for effect, is distorted in the original. The second-to-last song was a relatively new one, entitled Save You. Matthew informed the audience that this particular song is tentatively set to figure in the September 10th episode of ABC Family’s hit show, Kyle XY. This is for good reason, as it is a powerful song and evokes strong emotion. You can hear it on Matthew’s official site by clicking here. The final song in Matthew’s set was Beneath the Silver Moon, a fitting end to a relaxing night.
